Issue 41. 2023, over & out.
Hi friends! Liz here. 👋🏾 My last day in the office for 2023 coincides with the start of Winter, so I’m feeling just about ready to hibernate until Spring. But before I follow Dakota Johnson’s lead and sleep for 14 hours a day, it’s time for Modern Admin Wrapped! Below I’m highlighting your top 5 favorite stories this year.
First, a few quick things:
📝 I love to use the end of the year as an opportunity to hear from YOU. Please take a moment and fill out this 2-min survey. Your feedback helps shape the future of Modern Admin!
📚 ICYMI: Our culture calendars got a major upgrade. You can access all of 2024 here.
⏰ Before the clock strikes midnight on 2024, I hope you take a moment to celebrate yourself and all you have accomplished this year! You deserve it. ❣
I’ll be back in your inbox on Monday, January 8th. Until then, I’m wishing you & yours the happiest of holidays & a wonderful New Year! 🥂

The Favs of 2023

A Guide To Building Your Personal Brand: If quiet quitting was the leading trend of 2022, the rise of the workplace influencer took the cake in 2023. Regardless of rank at work (or employment status) individuals took to LinkedIn, sharing everything from tips related to their industry to private details about their marriage. And while social media isn’t the only way to build a name for yourself, having a personal brand may very well be as effective as a strong resume.
Navigating Trauma At Work: It’s (almost) 2024 and mental health at work is no longer a taboo topic. Whether employees are carrying trauma from a toxic culture or they’re a minority group being targeted via the media, there are so many invisible baggages that we all carry into the workplace. The key to navigating this as a manager of humans is to put in place programs and resources where employees can feel safe enough to show up as their authentic selves.
Caring For Adult Caretakers: Most companies are still getting their parental leave care right. But one thing that is coming up more and more is how to support employees who also moonlight as caretakers to adult family members. It’s a reality for over 30 million U.S. workers and the good news is there are plenty of tools & programs you can share that don’t require a big budget to stand up.
Pay Transparency: At the end of 2022, states began to roll out their own policies around companies disclosing salaries in job descriptions. And while we saw ranges as wide as several hundred thousand dollars for certain roles (lookin’ at you, Netflix), being upfront with candidates is the difference between gaining access to top talent and having employees simply decline to apply for your open role.
Corporate Buzzwords Get A Rewrite: I can’t be the only one that finds certain corporate jargon cringe worthy….so I took the liberty of rewriting some key phrases we hear all too often. And, who knows, maybe I’ll make this a permanent thing in 2024. : )

And that’s a wrap on 2023, my friends. Feel free to email me any topic you’d like me to unpack next year!

Liz’s Resources 🤎

Could 2024 be the year you launch your newsletter? I’ve been using email service providers (ESPs) for the past 10 years and can confidently say that Beehiiv* has completely changed the game when it comes to sending quality newsletters.
You might have noticed the switch I made in platforms this past summer from Flodesk to Beehiiv. And while all platforms offer their own set of perks, Beehiiv continues to stand out.
Where they get it right:
✅ Freemium version (under 2.5K subscribers)
✅ Ability to access their robust pre-negotiated ad-network (this is what I call working smarter, not harder)
✅ A+ Resource Center — they have an entire library of videos and articles to help you navigate issues. Plus they just launched a community for paid users.
✅ Built by the team behind Morning Brew ☕ , they’re introducing new features at 3x the speed of their competitors.
Still intrigued? Try them on for size.
