Modern Admin Weekly | Issue No.020

Hi — Liz here. 👋🏾

Call it the nerd in me, but I love simplifying corporate phrases in JDs.

“Bring structure to ambiguity.”
“Build scalable systems.”
“Operate with a high degree of ownership.”

AKA…we need someone who can help us figure things out.

And honestly? Those are often the most interesting jobs.

This week, we have six of them—from a HR Generalist role so nice I read it twice to a brand-new function at Anthropic paying up to $260K.

Let’s get into it.

🔎 How We Curate

Every role featured in Modern Admin meets the following criteria:

🧑🏽‍💻 Flexibility First — remote and hybrid roles that reflect how modern teams operate
💰 Compensation Transparency — if a company knows their budget, so should you
🤝 Culture Check — we look beyond reviews to assess leadership, tone, and reputation
🗂 Role Integrity — titles should match scope (no inflated or misleading roles)
🗓️ Recency — we prioritize fresh opportunities (~2 weeks)

01. Executive Assistant

GitHub

$68K–$180K + bonus & equity
Remote | Full-Time
Posted August 4 2026

There’s traditional executive support here, but GitHub is clearly looking for someone who can operate beyond the calendar. Alongside complex scheduling and travel, this EA will project manage OKRs and monthly business reviews, support onboarding for new leaders, assist with internal communications, and work across Product Leadership, Finance, HR, IT, and more. With 5+ years of experience preferred and a fully remote setup, this is a strong opportunity for an experienced EA who likes being close to the operational side of the business.

02. Generalist Assistant

D. E. Shaw Research

$115K–$150K + sign-on & annual bonus
Hybrid (NY) | Full-Time
Posted August 3 2026

Sometimes the simplest job descriptions hide the most interesting opportunities. D. E. Shaw Research is hiring a Generalist Assistant to support members of its Executive Committee, with responsibilities spanning scheduling, events, travel, expenses, and ad hoc research projects. There’s no exhaustive list of requirements or corporate buzzwords here—they’re looking for someone articulate, proactive, resourceful, and comfortable working independently. Add a $115K–$150K base, sign-on and year-end bonuses, generous benefits, and a Mondays and Fridays WFH schedule, and this understated role is absolutely worth a closer look.

03. People Operations Program Manager

Headway

$114K–$179K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted August 4 2026

If you’ve been wondering what AI actually looks like inside a People team, Headway is giving us a pretty good example. This People Operations Program Manager will build AI-powered workflows and agentic tools for HRBPs, automate employee processes, create org-health dashboards, and partner with Legal and IT on responsible AI guardrails. They want someone with real People Ops experience who is equally comfortable inside an HRIS, building an automation, or figuring out why a workflow isn’t working. It’s a fascinating look at where People Operations may be headed as AI becomes part of the infrastructure rather than just another tool in the stack.

04. HR Generalist

Runway

$130K-$170K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted August 8 2026

A $130K–$170K salary for an HR Generalist requiring 3–5 years of experience definitely got my attention. Runway is looking for someone to work across the employee lifecycle, from onboarding and HRIS administration to benefits, leave, employee relations, performance reviews, and engagement surveys. What I like most is that they aren’t dressing this up as something it isn’t: they want a capable generalist with good judgment, high emotional intelligence, and the ability to operate independently. For someone who genuinely enjoys the breadth of HR, this feels like an opportunity to do the work at an exciting AI company without needing a highly specialized résumé to get in the door.

05. Business Operations & Chief of Staff

Waymark

$124K–$229K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted August 5 2026

This is a Chief of Staff role for someone who wants to build how a company actually runs. Waymark is hiring a Business Operations Director & Chief of Staff to own strategic planning, OKRs, executive operating rhythms, internal communications, and the processes that keep a scaling organization coordinated. You’ll work closely with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team while still getting hands-on with everything from decision frameworks and cross-functional workflows to company meetings and board narratives. Healthcare experience is required, but for the right operator, the scope offers a rare combination of strategy, communications, and company-wide infrastructure.

06. Community & Executive Escalations Program Manager

Anthropic

$210K–$260K
Hybrid (NY,SF) | Full-time
Posted August 8 2026

Here’s a career path you may not have known existed. Anthropic is building a new Community & Executive Escalations function, and this Program Manager will be one of its founding members—monitoring public conversations, managing high-stakes incidents and executive escalations, briefing leaders, and helping determine how the company responds when user issues become reputation issues. They’re particularly interested in people coming from community operations, Trust & Safety, escalations, or customer support, which makes this a fascinating bridge for someone whose experience might not traditionally read as “executive-facing.” At $210K–$260K, it’s also a pretty compelling reminder of how valuable calm judgment, sharp communication, and pattern recognition can become at scale.

Culture Calendar by Modern Admin 🌱

If you’re the person planning team moments, improving morale, or trying to make work feel a little more human — Culture Calendar was built with you in mind.

August’s Culture Calendar is now live and includes our mid-year survey, key observances, heritage months, and employee engagement opportunities for the months ahead.

A small thing I’ve been using lately…

Six weeks, three countries and one 23kg suitcase later, I have become somewhat emotionally attached to my packing cubes.

Beyond the compression feature, having dedicated cubes for tops, laundry, sandals, etc. means I’m not digging through my entire suitcase every time I need one thing—which turns out to be very useful when you're moving every week or two.

Will they change your life? Probably not. Will they prevent you from rage-folding a suitcase full of clothes on a hotel floor? Quite possibly. (affiliate link)

Until next time, stay modern.
