Modern Admin Weekly | Issue No.017

Hi — Liz here. 👋🏾

One thing I love about writing these weekly letters is sharing insights that come from reading hundreds of job postings each month.

This week, it wasn't just the companies that caught my attention—it was one role in particular: Community Manager.

It isn't a title we've featured before, but the more I read, the more I realized how many of its core responsibilities overlap with skills many admins already have.

I have a feeling this won't be the last "adjacent career path" we explore together.

Let's get into it.

🔎 How We Curate

Every role featured in Modern Admin meets the following criteria:

🧑🏽‍💻 Flexibility First — remote and hybrid roles that reflect how modern teams operate
💰 Compensation Transparency — if a company knows their budget, so should you
🤝 Culture Check — we look beyond reviews to assess leadership, tone, and reputation
🗂 Role Integrity — titles should match scope (no inflated or misleading roles)
🗓️ Recency — we prioritize fresh opportunities (~2 weeks)

01. Senior Director, People Business Partner

GitLab

$185K-$380K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted July 9 2026

One of the highest-paying People roles I've come across this year comes from GitLab. As Senior Director, People Business Partner, you'll work directly with multiple C-suite executives while leading a global team of HR business partners. This role goes far beyond traditional HR—think organizational design, succession planning, workforce strategy, executive coaching, and helping the business navigate AI-driven transformation at scale. One thing that stood out: if you're interviewing, be prepared to speak about business outcomes just as confidently as people programs.

02. People Operations Generalist

Pie Insurance

$80K–$100K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted July 9 2026

Pie Insurance is hiring a People Operations Generalist to support everything from employee relations and performance management to HR systems, workforce analytics, benefits, and employee engagement. It's the kind of cross-functional role where no two days look the same—and a great fit for someone who enjoys balancing people strategy with the operational work that keeps a growing company running smoothly. Worth noting: Pie shares that AI is used during its hiring process, so tailoring your resume to the role is especially important.

03. Chief of Staff

Huntress

$200K–$275K + bonus + equity
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted July 17 2026

Board meetings. Annual planning. Cross-functional "tiger teams." If bringing structure to complex work is your sweet spot, Huntress has a Chief of Staff role worth a look. You'll help keep the company's biggest priorities moving—from running the Board operating cadence to leading quarterly business reviews and assembling teams around high-impact initiatives. They're looking for someone with 8+ years of experience and, perhaps most importantly, a practical, low-ego leadership style.

04. Chief of Staff

Cohere

$250K–$310K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted July 11 2026

Love sales strategy as much as company strategy? Cohere is hiring a Chief of Staff to help scale its Revenue organization at one of the world's leading AI companies. From pipeline management and forecasting to executive communications, board presentations, and cross-functional execution, this role sits at the center of how the company grows. If you've ever wondered what a commercially focused Chief of Staff looks like, this is a strong example.

05. Executive Assistant, Design

Figma

$127K–$221K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted July 15 2026

Figma continues to be one of those companies whose job postings are worth reading, even if you're not actively looking. They're hiring an Executive Assistant, Design to support Design VPs as the organization scales. Beyond managing calendars and travel, you'll help shape operating rhythms, optimize workflows, drive cross-functional initiatives, and serve as a trusted thought partner to leadership. One thing that stood out: Figma specifically looks for candidates who embrace AI to improve operational efficiency—a skill that's quickly becoming part of the modern EA toolkit.

06. Community Manager

Community Phone

$85K–$105K
Remote (US) | Full-Time
Posted July 10 2026

One of this week's most interesting roles isn't a traditional admin position at all. Community Phone is hiring a Community Manager to turn loyal customers into an engaged community through newsletters, referral programs, organic social, and storytelling. It's a great example of how skills like communication, relationship building, project management, and creating exceptional experiences can translate into adjacent careers. If you're applying, don't just showcase the content you've created—highlight the business impact it generated.

07. Program Manager, Community (Contract)

Airtable

$60–$80 per hour
Remote (US) | Contract
Posted July 15 2026

If Community Phone introduced one side of Community Management, Airtable highlights another. This 12-month Community Program Manager role focuses on building the systems behind a thriving customer community—from launching Builder Crews and creating playbooks to growing AI adoption and improving community operations. It's a great example of how the role can blend program management, customer experience, and operational excellence. One thing that stood out: Airtable asks applicants to share real examples of how they're already using AI in their current role, another signal that practical AI fluency is quickly becoming an expectation rather than a bonus.

Culture Calendar by Modern Admin 🌱

If you’re the person planning team moments, improving morale, or trying to make work feel a little more human — Culture Calendar was built with you in mind.

July + August’s Culture Calendar is now live and includes our mid-year survey, key observances, heritage months, and employee engagement opportunities for the months ahead.

A small thing…

To keep track of all the “small things” that make life a tiny bit easier, I’ve curated a small store where you can find all of my recommendations to date.

This week’s small thing? Summer Fridays Iced Coffee Lip Butter Balm which was kindly gifted to me from a client to celebrate the start of Summer Fridays ☀ .

I'm usually the person with a tiny tube of Vaseline in her tote, but this might have converted me. It's smooth, non-sticky, keeps my lips moisturized, and the yummy taste is just an added bonus. (affiliate link)

Until next time, stay modern.
